Africa becomes first continent to complete collection of digital land use data.

Africa has become the first continent in the world to complete the collection of accurate, comprehensive and harmonised digital land use and land use change data under the Africa Open DEAL initiative. DEAL stands for Data for the Environment, Agriculture and Land Initiative.
The data collection and analysis initiative is led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the African Union Commission (AUC).

Unwaste.io Launches Data-Driven Collection of Single-use Plastic in East-Africa.

Single-use plastic management will now be data-driven in Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia thanks to Wastebase. The app has just been launched by unwaste.io, a company founded in 2020 by software engineers Cameron Smith (based in Maputo, Mozambique) and Martin Pllu (based in Edinburgh, UK).

Orange announces launch of 5G Pilot in Mali.

Mobile operator Orange Mali has announced the launch of a 5G pilot in Bamako, the country’s capital. Seven months after testing the technology in Senegal, Orange is now testing 5G in Mali and invites customers to be among the first to try out the new network.

Kenya’s Alfluence closes $1M for its AI-powered influencer marketing Platform

AIfluence is a two-year-old startup with an AI-driven influencer marketing approach to measuring the ROI of influencer marketing campaigns, a challenge faced by Brand teams globally. Today, the company is announcing that it has raised $1 million in seed investment led by Dubai-based EQ2 Ventures. Other investors include Antler East Africa, Oui Capital, ArabyAds and an unnamed European family office.

Zambia turns to data to improve rural electrification efforts

The Rural Electrification Authority of Zambia and the Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to monitor and support the country’s electrification efforts through data collection and analysis.

Nigeria tackles traffic gridlock with tech. (Nigeria introduces tech to capture traffic offenders in real-time)

Nigeria’s most populous City, Lagos has introduced a technological-driven device called: the Traffic Management Solution Device (TMS), aimed at ensuring that the residents comply with traffic law. The TMS is a handheld device, would allow for real-time capture of picture and video evidence
of road traffic and vehicle compliance violations as they occur.
