Lagos, October 23, 2017 With a score of 8.08156 and 10 entries, Balogun Adeola, a Software intern with the Ife Tech Hub of Terragon Group and 400 level student of Computer Science of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, won the 2017 Kaggle competition on score prediction at the second edition of Data Science Nigeria (DSN) Boot Camp.
The competitive hackathon, which was held in Lagos from the 12 – 15 October 2017, was aimed at using Nigeria-centric data to explore, extrapolate and explain local socio-economic issues. The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics and ProShare Nigeria also provided data support services to the participants.
DSN is a non-profit initiative founded by MTN’s Chief Transformation Officer, Bayo Adekanmbi. It’s spurred on by a compelling drive to raise a new generation of world-class data scientists and knowledge entrepreneurs who will set up data science-based businesses and attract foreign exchange to Nigeria.
Speaking about this win, Senior Software Engineer and Head of Ife Tech Hub, Oluwasegun Adetimehin, said that this win has validated the work being done at the Ife Tech Hub. “Adeola has always been a super performer so the win didn’t come as a surprise to us. As a team, it has challenged us to continually build relevant competencies in these students that will launch them as complete tech graduates post convocation”
Terragon Group started The Tech Talent Hub Programme in April 2016 as an attempt to create a pool of relevant tech talent focused on Software Development and Programming. The first in the series, The Ife Tech Hub, is situated very close to the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, to give participants the opportunity to work closely with the global technology team during their internships and pre/post NYSC stints, through a project based system. With the required skills and attributes to function, exceptional talents are retained within the business.
