For this year’s elections, Nigerians noticed a new twist to the campaigns. The buzz this elections created on Social media to engage the younger audience and the extravagant outdoor campaigns cannot be forgotten in a hurry.

There is a lot for organizations to learn from the election campaign about engaging large audiences and growing their businesses to get the desired results.

1.      Overspending doesn’t always provide the expected results:

According to  Business news report, an estimate of N4.9 billion was spent on campaigns by the two strongest opposition parties; the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), this year’s election campaign will go down in history books as one of the most expensive. All forms of platforms and channels were used.

Every business has competitors who are constantly working to outdo yours. Customers are looking past the hype they are used to because they want to know in detail why your product/service is better than that of competition. Even ‘Hate Advertising’ may not necessarily appeal to your audience. With this in mind, your product/service has to be channeled directly to your target market through the right channels, with the right messages, to get their attention.

2.      Don’t live in a bubble. Social media is key for engagement:

Social media data showed a lot of buzz and activity leading up to and during the presidential elections. This saw a lot of candidates from two of the fourteen political parties creating social media accounts to get closer to the voters who in turn created hashtags, memes, and even fake Twitter profiles in response to lines from the candidates. It was disheartening to know that the other twelve parties contesting for this post did not lay a lot of emphasis on this route, so much so that many didn’t know they were even contesting.

To increase the reach of your business, you need to identify the best channels to communicate and engage your target market. Think of ways to make your product attractive to them and reaching them where they can easily be found – online. Tap into their passions by using catchphrase or hashtags that can be shared on social media channels. With this, your product or service is sure to be top on their minds.

3.      Choose your partners wisely:

APC is a party that was formed in 2013 by the alliance of three different parties: Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). When this happened, most people didn’t understand how beneficial the merge could be to them. Now that the results are out, it is clear to everyone to see that the stronghold of CPC and ANPP  in the northern part of Nigeria and the hold of the ACN in the southwest made it possible for APC to win.

The choice of beneficial partners to the growth of any business has to be done properly. This will also include staffs, and vendors, among others. It may be a long term goal but it surely will be a key ingredient to the growth of your business. Do your homework right and the result will speak for itself.

4.      Keep chasing your dreams and there’s always a chance that it will become a reality:

The win of the APC can be best described as a clear example of perseverance. This is because their presidential candidate retired Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has contested for this position four times. Mistakes will happen, failures may abound but as long as you keep your eyes on the prize, the sky may just be your starting point and success a step away.
